The lubricating and antistatic properties of the product are used in sewing complex materials: rubber, leatherette, reinforced PVC, etc. In this case, the parts of the sewing machine, threads, and irons are oiled. The advantages of the product are that it does not have a deforming effect, does not get dirty, and does not leave marks. Used when zippers get stuck on items of clothing.
In the food industry, the product can be used as natural preservative for fruits, vegetables, eggs, nuts, significantly increasing their shelf life. It is present in recipes for making some confectionery products: chocolate and glazes, caramel, muffins, chewing gum, sweet cheeses.
In agriculture and private farms it is used as a carrier in the production of pesticides for spraying plants. The destructive effect on harmful insects is due to the product clogging their spiracles, causing asphyxia, as well as a destructive effect on their eggs and tissue structure. Vaseline oil is included in preparations against ticks, moths, scale insects, false scale insects, aphids, scale insects, whiteflies, copperheads, and leaf rollers. Tree and shrub crops (apple, plum, cherry, pear, citrus fruits, gooseberries, raspberries, currants, grapes, cherries, etc.) are subject to treatment against pests. Due to phytoncidal properties, it is not used for herbaceous plants.

Contraindications

The proven safety of the drug and its naturalness make it possible to use it for various age groups, including children. However, there are a number of contraindications to the use of petroleum jelly:

inflammatory phenomena in the abdominal cavity;
helminthic infestation;
Internal use for hemorrhoids is prohibited;
pregnancy and lactation, since activation of the intestines can provoke an increase in uterine tone;
ulcerative lesions of the digestive tract;
in case of poisoning with drugs containing phosphorus;
feverish conditions;
intestinal obstruction and bleeding;
hypersensitivity reactions.

Side effects

In the vast majority of cases, the use of petroleum jelly is not accompanied by negative effects. But in some situations, the following side effects may occur:

decreased intestinal tone (atony) with prolonged use;
deterioration of food digestion;
clogging of pores in infants (for this reason, Vaseline oil is applied in a thin layer and washed off after a while);
hypovitaminosis with prolonged use due to impaired absorption of fat-soluble vitamins;
oil low quality poorly cleaned can cause skin irritation, allergic dermatitis(vaselinoderma), which is manifested by rashes throughout the body and the presence of blisters.

Organic matter, one of the fractions obtained as a result of petroleum distillation. Consists of a mixture of saturated paraffinic aliphatic hydrocarbons: from C 10 to C 15. One of commercial names- “liquid paraffin”.

It is important not to confuse petroleum jelly and petroleum jelly - the latter contains both petroleum jelly and paraffins, and its consistency is not liquid, but pasty.

Properties

The oil is a viscous liquid without color, taste or smell, completely transparent. The liquid is flammable, spontaneous combustion temperature is +290 °C. Not water soluble. Hardens at t -8 °C.

The chemical reagent has the same properties as Vaseline. It dissolves in ether, chloroform, gasoline, white spirit, carbon disulfide. Easily mixes with vegetable oils (except castor) and other organic and inorganic substances. This property is used in pharmacology and cosmetology, for example, iodine, iodoform, camphor, phenol, thymol, atropine, benzoic acid etc. Insoluble in alcohols, but can form an emulsion with isopropyl alcohol. It does not oxidize in air, so it does not go rancid. Does not saponify under the influence of alkalis.

Safety precautions

Vaseline oil burns, so when working with it you must adhere to fire safety rules: do not smoke or use open fire indoors. Lamps in the room need to be explosion-proof. Opening containers with it should be done in ways that prevent the occurrence of sparks.

The work area must be installed supply and exhaust system ventilation, equipment is sealed so that oil vapors do not enter the air. Personnel must use protective equipment: overalls, gloves.

An oil spill can cause vapors to escape into the air and increase the risk of fire. Therefore, if possible, the oil is collected, and the spill area is wiped with kerosene and wiped dry. If it is impossible to collect, then the oil is covered with sand and the sand and the substance are disposed of.

A Vaseline oil fire can be extinguished with finely sprayed water, carbon dioxide, sand, foam fire extinguishers, an asbestos blanket, and superheated steam.

Vaseline oil is stored and transported in steel or glass containers.

Impact on humans

Vaseline oil, especially medical grade, is non-toxic and does not cause allergic reactions and irritation, is almost not absorbed through the surface of the skin or mucous membranes. This property is used to slow down the absorption of oil mixed medicines.

In industry, it is used as a waterproof and resistant to chemical oxidizing base for lubricants; as part of oils for working with vacuum.
- In the food industry: the basis of lubricating oils for equipment; used in the production of casings for sausages and frankfurters; to protect candies from sticking; in bakeries it is often used to treat wooden cutting surfaces - the oil fills the pores of the wood, preventing them from absorbing odors, dirt and microorganisms.
- Defoamer in the chemical industry when producing penicillin; raw materials for the production of petroleum jelly, silica gel.
- Included in some types of building enamels.
- In baths and saunas, wooden shelves are protected with oil.
- For storing cesium.
- In pharmaceuticals and medicine - a solvent for drugs; laxative for oral administration; compress agent; for lubricating leather and instruments.
- In cosmetology: the basis for the preparation of lotions, creams, including children's, ointments for the body and hair. In its pure form it can be used to lubricate the skin of newborns.
- In churches and buildings of historical significance, Vaseline oil is used as lamp oil. It burns without the formation of soot, which is important for the preservation of paintings, icons, and frescoes.
- In analytical studies: compositions for IR spectroscopy are made based on petroleum jelly.
