Fashion trends of the 2000s and what happened to them now. Denim jackets, skirts, trousers, overalls

Russian fashion of the 2000s largely continued the traditions of the previous decade. Everything foreign was in trend; the terms and rules of the “fashion game” were dictated by pop culture. It was simply impossible to keep up with changing trends. However, some general rules still there were.

The trendsetters of that period were such young American stars as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez. With their light hand, the image of a young girl-nymphet came into fashion. A craze began for short “school” skirts, low-rise trousers and jeans, and crop tops. Opening your legs, belly, and chest has become simply necessary. Even bulky knitted sweaters have become incredibly short and turned into something similar to a crop top. Also, fur items appeared in the wardrobes of fashionistas, which were combined with light summer dresses. The neon colors of the outfits continued this “ball” of bad taste and anti-style.

Besides the fact that the clothes were short and brightly colored, they were also completely tight. Sexy skirts and boxer tops made it possible to see all the curves female body. Real propaganda of “porn chic”.

During the same period of time, sports and androgynous styles began to be popularized. Russia was no exception to the rule. Girls and boys began to wear oversized jeans, shirts, stretched sweaters, leather jackets, and heavy boots. Men's and women's fashion were leveled out and merged into something common called “unisex”.

Capris were incredibly popular. They came into fashion somewhere around 2003, and at first their purpose was purely sporty, but then designers began to create these things with a slight touch of romanticism.

Romanticism came into fashion in 2006 and was marked by the massive love of all Russian women for tunics. Which perfectly hid figure flaws. The younger and more advanced paired them with jeans, cowboy boots and hats. Also, at the peak of romanticism, high-waisted dresses, which are still popular today, and outerwear with floral prints began to appear on the shelves.

It must be said that Russian fashion of the 2000s merged with European and American fashion thanks to the mass media. TV and the Internet actively promoted Western style. The Russian people could only imitate, although this imitation was limited by the financial capabilities of many millions of citizens.

Style icons, so to speak, during that period were such “socialites” as Ksenia Sobchak, Masha Malinovskaya, Oksana Robski, Masha Tsigal and others. Their style, or rather the lack of it, was replicated in the press and was perceived by many ordinary people as a kind of norm that should be copied.

We can confidently summarize that fashion in Russia during this period did not exist at all. There was a shocking mixture of styles in the conditions of a shortage of quality products and, first of all, fabrics, as well as in the absence of domestic, original designers. During this period, mass migration of young people abroad began. They brought from there what they could afford to buy with the relatively little money they had. This is how the first Valentino, Lagerfeld, Mustang, Fendi, Emanuel, Ungaro appeared on Russian streets. Young people experimented and created new trends, such as sneakers with feminine long maxi skirts. Also during this period, second-hand stores were in trend, where you could find very cheap, but designer items from old collections.

A little later, mass-market stores such as Topshop, Zara, and Primark appeared in Russia. There is an opportunity to dress stylishly, fashionably and relatively inexpensively.

This is a period of design and stylistic experiments that led to the emergence of a modern, very restrained style.

The only successful trend of this period can be considered flared jeans, which are still popular in Russia today. They sat perfectly on good female figures(and they also looked good on not very good ones). Although by the end of the decade one could already observe the predominance of minimalism and constructivism, white, gray and black colors in clothing. Then they began to pay attention again to the quality of fabric and cut.

Despite all the above criticism, the fashion for the “zeros” is returning and this is noticeable in everything. By the way stars and young girls dress, by what Fashion houses and designers offer. This “comeback” is connected, first of all, with the fact that the fashion of the 2000s was not imposed by someone, it came “from the people”, strengthened and became popular. And although nouveau riche chic, porn chic, grunge, and R’n’B style will not return completely, some of their elements will experience a rebirth and adapt to new realities. And this applies not only to clothes. Nowadays, long, often false nails, corrugated curls, small braids, bright makeup, and jewelry are back in fashion. Look at how Adele, Lana Del Rey, Katy Perry, Bianca or Nyusha dress. Leopard print is back in fashion, as are fishnet tights. Fashion is cyclical, it comes and goes, giving birth to trends that, unlike fashion, remain forever.

Talking about the fashion of the 2000s is not at all as easy as talking about the fashion of the decades of the last century. If there was one before fashion style could hold on for many years, then already at the beginning of this millennium girls gave up trying to keep up with fashion. To do this, it was necessary to change the entire contents of the cabinets literally every year.

Fashion has indeed become a very changeable young lady, whose mood changes dramatically. But there were still general trends; let’s try to remember them.

The millennium began with fashion, which was brought to the masses by pop singers. Both young girls and older ladies tried to imitate the style of the playful schoolgirl. Short clothes, allowing you to show off a flat tummy and perfect legs, were in favor.

The beginning of the 2000s was remembered for the abundance of naked bodies - everyone was naked and did it quickly. Even knitted sweaters were normal to create and wear in the most extreme short version.

After that, bright colors came into fashion, which became logical - and very tasteless! – a continuation of the trend for short things. It is mandatory to have fur items in the wardrobe, which were combined with light, short dresses.

And then came the sporty style. Wide jeans, voluminous T-shirts and sweatshirts, sports dresses and overalls. Sweatpants were mixed with sequined crop tops, creating an unimaginable cocktail that was not always pleasant to see. But the 2000s became a time of discovery, a time when fashionistas realized that they could be free in terms of style—and experiment endlessly.

These experiments were not always successful. The only trend of the beginning of the millennium that has survived to this day was flared jeans, which saved many disproportionate figures. Until now, many fashion houses offer their fans trousers and jeans of exactly this type.

There was no 2000s style as such. But experiments with bad fabric, bright and flashy tones and a mixture of incompatible styles only led to what we have now - to the tenth year, which will be remembered for elegance, permissiveness, which, at the same time, leaves fashionistas restrained, softly shocking and... the ability to dress beautifully. As in the tenth years of the last century, fashionistas are beginning to value fabric and texture rather than the opportunity to surprise. And the 2000s were an excellent springboard for such a takeoff...

We've collected 15 of the craziest looks Russian stars originally from the 2000s!

Philip Kirkorov

The harsh Russian winter spares no one, so Philip prudently decided to warm himself, but was too carried away by the process - in the resulting outfit, the singer could well have played in the film “The Revenant.”

Valery Leontyev

Popular

Sequins, a dubious vest over a naked body and red pointed shoes already raise a lot of questions. But then you notice a woman’s pink sandal tied to Valery’s trousers...

Natasha Koroleva

A unicorn fur coat, a mesh top, a push-up and a belt buckle that can be used as a sinker while fishing - Natasha Koroleva knew a lot about 2000s glamour!

Yulia Volkova

A plush jumpsuit, white cowboy boots and a couple of transferred cans of self-tanning - the image is still the same, but in this rare photo we can see the “natural” Yulia before many body modifications.

Ksenia Sobchak

Once upon a time, Ksenia was considered the “Russian Paris Hilton,” and her glamorous images were a real talk of the town, as was, again, her love for self-tanning.

Masha Malinovskaya

Perhaps Masha wanted to wear a crop top, but there wasn’t one at home - she had to pull up her sweater all evening.

Tatiana Ovsienko

Yes, it's true - in the 2000s, it was fashionable to wear a skirt over jeans. And we are happy that this fashion remained in that time.

Alena Apina

And here are the lingerie style lessons from the “zeros” from Alena Apina. But the main thing here is not the dress, but the sudden pink boutonniere on the neck and boots with ultra-long toes.

Shura

Shura delighted fans with very eclectic outfits in the 1990s. In the 2000s, the singer continued to shock the audience.

Masha Rasputina

A great complementary illustration to our selection of the worst celebrity outings in Leopard.

Lolita

Sometimes it’s worth following the “it’s either your chest or your legs” rule without hesitation. And also don’t hesitate to choose your legs.

Maxim

Another thing from the “zeros” that, fortunately, has gone out of fashion forever is a variety of breeches. Especially shiny and with lace.

Anita Tsoi

In this image, everything came together so eeriely that in the end it even looks frighteningly harmonious: a dress with a pattern reminiscent of Khokhloma, high boots made from the paws of a red mammoth and the carpet on which Anita is posing.

Irina Saltykova

There are never too many labels, Irina decided, especially Chanel, so she didn’t waste time on trifles and literally covered herself with the famous logo.
